David Byrne's New Song Takes Aim at Elon Musk in Upcoming Documentary

David Byrne, the iconic frontman of Talking Heads, has crafted an original track for the much-anticipated documentary titled "Musk," directed by Alex Gibney. The song, "Let Me Sell You a Dream," is co-written with celebrated composer Daniel Pemberton and is poised to compete for an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category.

Gibney expressed his excitement over Byrne's involvement, noting his long-time admiration for the musician. The documentary, which runs for a staggering 235 minutes, aims to provide a comprehensive look at the controversial figure of Elon Musk. Byrne's lyrics are derived directly from Musk's own words, allowing the documentary's narrative to resonate with sardonic flair. Byrne remarked on the lyrical process, stating, "I asked for good quotes from the Martian… All his own words. No editorializing. Straight from the man’s mouth to mine." This collaboration marks a significant moment for Byrne, who last won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for "The Last Emperor" in 1988.

Scheduled for theatrical release on October 16, "Musk" meets the eligibility requirements for the 2027 Oscars. The film, described as a "definitive and unvarnished examination" of Musk, will premiere out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival on September 8 before heading to the Toronto International Film Festival.
