Debate on New Provinces Could Extend Over Eight Months, Says PM's Adviser

In a recent meeting with journalists in Lahore, Rana Sanaullah Khan, the Prime Minister's Adviser on Political Affairs, outlined the timeline and current status of the discussions surrounding the creation of new provinces in Pakistan. He emphasized that the conversation is still in its infancy, suggesting it could take six to eight months for any proposal to navigate through parliament and its committees.

Khan clarified that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has not initiated any plans for new provinces, asserting that if such proposals are formally presented, all political parties will have the chance to weigh in. He underscored the importance of thorough deliberation, noting that the topic might also lead to discussions regarding local government elections.

On the issue of Bahawalpur's administrative status, he revealed that local PML-N leaders are divided on whether to include the region in a proposed South Punjab province or to pursue its recognition as a separate province. The political ramifications of this debate are evident, with opposition parties like the Pakistan Peoples Party leveraging the issue for political gain.
