Historic Road Bridge Unites Russia and North Korea

In a significant step towards closer ties, Russia and North Korea inaugurated their first road bridge across the Tumen River on September 8, 2026. This landmark structure, which spans one kilometer (0.6 miles) and features two lanes, is expected to accommodate up to 300 vehicles daily, marking a new chapter in cross-border cooperation.
During the virtual opening ceremony, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin expressed optimism about the bridge's potential to enhance trade, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural exchanges between the two nations. He stated, "I am convinced that the expansion of transport infrastructure near the border will give a powerful boost to the further development of trade, economic, technological, scientific and cultural cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."
The bridge's completion follows a growing trend of collaboration between Russia and North Korea, particularly since North Korea has been providing military support to Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, North Korea has welcomed Russian tourists since February 2024 as it gradually opens up following pandemic restrictions. The construction of the road bridge, agreed upon in 2024, complements existing rail and air links between the two countries, further solidifying their partnership.
