North Korea's Troop Deployment to Russia Looms, but Not Immediate

By Editor • August 24, 2026 • 1 min read

On August 24, South Korea's Defence Ministry revealed that North Korea is actively preparing to send more troops to Russia, although no immediate deployment appears likely. This update follows a denial from Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s claims of a potential 50,000 troop transfer.

According to a statement from lawmaker Yu Yong-weon, North Korea continues to supply Russia with military equipment, including short-range ballistic missiles. Estimates suggest that over 15 million rounds of artillery ammunition have been delivered to Russia.

Additionally, the ministry reported that North Korea's missile technology may have advanced through battlefield data and Russian support, while preparations for its Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile are nearing completion. This missile has the capability to strike the U.S. territory of Guam.
