Innovative 3D Printing Creates Sustainable Student Housing in Denmark

In an ambitious project, Skovsporet offers 36 student apartments in Holstebro, Denmark, designed by SAGA Space Architects and MS+ Arkitekter. This development showcases the potential of 3D printing in residential construction, creating a small village of low-rise structures that promote both private living and communal interaction.
Strategically located near VIA University College, the apartments are organized around shared courtyards, gardens, and paths, providing residents with vibrant outdoor spaces. Remarkably, the design preserved 90 percent of the existing trees on the site, integrating the buildings into the natural landscape.
The apartments, each featuring a kitchen, study area, lounge, bathroom, and sleeping space, are constructed using a blend of 3D printed concrete, cork panels, and traditional roofing materials. A COBOD BOD3 printer was employed on-site to create the structural elements with an eco-friendly twist, utilizing FUTURECEM, a lower-carbon cement developed by Aalborg Portland.
Additionally, the project introduced innovative materials like MEVOcem, a cement-free alternative that drastically reduces CO2 emissions, used for the bicycle sheds. This forward-thinking approach not only meets the housing needs of students but also sets a precedent for sustainable construction practices.
With construction concluded, the apartments are set to welcome students in September. Skovsporet serves as a foundation for ongoing research by SAGA Space Architects and the 3DCP Group, exploring new materials and manufacturing techniques for future 3D printing endeavors.
