This year, MIT Technology Review has spotlighted a remarkable group of individuals under 35 who are making significant strides in the biotech sector. Among the 35 Innovators Under 35, five young innovators have garnered attention for their groundbreaking work, which promises to redefine medical practices and technologies.

Life-Saving Innovations in Maternal Health

Paschal Kija, a 28-year-old innovator from Tanzania, is addressing a critical issue in maternal health with his invention of the Mkanda Salama, or "Safe Wrap". This device is designed to combat postpartum hemorrhage, a condition responsible for nearly 29% of maternal deaths in his country. Remarkably, studies indicate that the Mkanda Salama can halt postpartum bleeding in 73% of cases within just 20 minutes, all for a cost of $70.

Revolutionizing Brain Technology

Another pioneer, Xiao Yang, 34, is focused on advancing brain electrodes. Her unique approach involves creating ultra-small, flexible electrodes that minimize damage to surrounding brain tissue. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese art of kirigami, Yang has developed a honeycomb-structured electrode sheet to enhance the study of brain cells in laboratory settings.

Personalized Gene Therapy for Rare Disorders

Sarah Grandinette, 26, played a key role in developing a personalized gene-editing therapy for Kyle “KJ” Muldoon Jr., who was born with a rare genetic disorder. This innovative treatment, which began when KJ was seven months old, successfully addressed a genetic misspelling, and KJ has shown promising recovery, as noted by Grandinette.

Age-Reversal Treatments for Eye Diseases

Yuancheng (Ryan) Lu, now 34, is at the forefront of longevity research. His team’s groundbreaking work in 2020 demonstrated that a reprogramming therapy could reverse vision loss in aged mice. This therapy is currently being tested on human subjects with eye diseases, marking a significant advancement in regenerative medicine.

AI-Driven Virus Design

Lastly, 27-year-old Samuel King is exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and virology. By leveraging a generative AI model, he has created new genetic blueprints for bacteriophages. His findings indicate that these AI-designed viruses can replicate and infect bacteria, potentially paving the way for future applications in drug development and environmental cleanup.
