Iranian Families Face Harsh Economic Reality Amid Ongoing Turmoil

In Iran, the struggle for a dignified life has become increasingly elusive for many, particularly for those born in the 1980s who identify as the "burned generation." This demographic has endured decades of hardship stemming from the 1979 Islamic Revolution and subsequent conflicts, with the current economic climate exacerbated by intense sanctions and military actions.
Generational Struggles and Economic Challenges
Bardia, a 23-year-old living with his parents in eastern Tehran, articulates the frustration of his generation. He believes that young Iranians face greater challenges than their predecessors due to worsening sanctions, which have created a volatile job market and soaring inflation. As he reflects on the dreams of independence and stability, he notes, "Becoming independent or forming a family, emigrating away, buying a home, a shop, a car or even a new phone is becoming more of a distant dream every day."
Soaring Inflation and Shrinking Budgets
The economic situation in Iran has deteriorated significantly, with year-on-year inflation soaring to 89 percent and food inflation exceeding 127 percent, according to recent data. Bardia and his family live on approximately 800 million rials (around $350) a month, a sum that is quickly depleted by rising costs. The family can afford meat only once every six to eight weeks and struggles to cover basic needs, reflecting a grim reality for many households.
Adapting to a New Normal
As the Iranian economy grapples with continuous external pressures and domestic mismanagement, households are adjusting their lifestyles in response to financial strain. Economist Behnam Samadi points out that while families are becoming more resourceful, this adaptation comes at a steep price, resulting in diminished living standards and increased uncertainty. He warns that what is currently perceived as resilience may eventually lead to an erosion of that very resilience if conditions do not improve.
