Israel to Free Five Lebanese Detainees Amid Ongoing Negotiations

In a significant move, Israel has announced the release of five Lebanese detainees, confirmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on September 3, 2026. The decision follows investigations that revealed the detainees had no ties to militant organizations.
This development is part of ongoing negotiations between Israel and Lebanon aimed at recovering the remains of Jewish community leaders abducted and murdered in the mid-1980s. As part of these negotiations, Israel has previously engaged in ground operations to locate the remains.
One of the detainees, Malek Kamal Ghazi, who was captured in October 2025, has already been released and was handed over to Lebanese authorities by the Red Cross. Reports clarify that he and the others are civilians, dismissing claims of any association with Hezbollah. Currently, 35 Lebanese detainees remain in Israeli custody, including 20 civilians.
