In a vibrant Milanese courtyard this past April, Kelly Wearstler showcased her inaugural collection for H&M Home, transforming the historic Palazzo Acerbi into a modern design spectacle. The installation featured a striking wooden sculpture that cleverly disguised modular chairs, creating a stunning visual reminiscent of a contemporary ziggurat.
As visitors ascended the grand staircase, they were greeted by a series of rooms adorned with whimsical floral fabrics and playful mirrors, all highlighting Wearstler’s innovative designs. The celebrated designer, known for her luxurious residential and hospitality projects, was present in a chic gray jumpsuit, enthusiastically guiding guests through her creations.
“We wanted the objects to unfold—and then take hold of—all the different rooms in the house,” Wearstler explained, emphasizing her focus on storytelling throughout the collection. This collaboration with H&M marks a shift in her approach, as she aims to make high-quality design accessible to a broader audience. “I want to help people to live better, to be creative, and to have really timeless design in their home,” she added.
Wearstler, who has previously collaborated with brands like Farrow & Ball and The Rug Company, found the opportunity with H&M particularly appealing due to the potential reach of her designs. “Being able to do something that is accessible to so many people… there was something really cool about that,” she noted.
Despite the constraints of the project, Wearstler embraced them as a catalyst for creativity. The modular designs, such as the stacked bouclé armchairs, epitomize her philosophy that pieces should adapt to individual lifestyles. “We have limitations in all of our projects,” she said, “but it was great, and it really pushed us to be more creative.”
Each item in the collection showcases a mix of premium materials like natural marble and wool-cashmere blends, ensuring that while the prices are accessible, the quality remains high. “It’s affordable, but the quality is still there,” Wearstler affirmed.
Perhaps the most unexpected element of the collaboration is the accompanying capsule fashion line, which Wearstler proposed midway through the project. “Fashion is such a big inspiration for me,” she explained, highlighting the interconnectedness of lifestyle and design.
As the collection prepares to launch, Wearstler reflects on the journey of bringing her vision to life over the past 18 months. “It’s just so great to see everyone enjoying the pieces,” she said, eager to share her designs with a worldwide audience.
