Lee Chang-dong's 'Possible Love' Captivates Venice with Emotional Standing Ovation

At the Venice Film Festival, acclaimed South Korean director Lee Chang-dong made a poignant return with his latest work, "Possible Love," drawing an overwhelming six-minute standing ovation from the audience.

The film, which Lee co-wrote with Oh Jung-mi, intricately weaves the narratives of two married couples whose lives converge in the wake of a funeral. Notable actors from Lee's previous films, including Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong, all bring their talents to this touching drama.

As the credits rolled, emotions ran high among the cast, who were seen shedding tears and embracing each other in response to the audience's warm reception. Although the applause could have lasted even longer, the cast was eventually led away after the six-minute mark, leaving behind a lingering sense of connection with the viewers.

Lee shared his thoughts on the creative process, stating, "I’m not the type of filmmaker who can make movies easily. Before I begin a film, I must be certain of what it means — to me, to the audience, and to cinema itself." This dedication explains the lengthy hiatus since his last film, with "Possible Love" being his first feature in eight years.

Following its success at Venice, Netflix is set to release the film, with screenings planned at the Toronto and New York film festivals. "Possible Love" is slated to hit U.S. theaters on October 23 and will be available for global streaming on November 6.
