Met Gala Honors John Galliano, Then Reverses Course Amid Controversy

By Editor • September 6, 2026 • 1 min read

The fashion world was taken aback when the Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced it would no longer honor designer John Galliano at the 2027 Met Gala. This decision comes despite a long-standing advocacy for Galliano by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who has campaigned for his redemption in the industry.

Initially, the announcement of Galliano as the honoree sparked a wave of enthusiasm among fashion aficionados. Vintage dealer Johnny Valencia, who has worked with high-profile clients like Beyoncé and Rihanna, expressed that the anticipation surrounding the theme was reminiscent of the excitement generated by the Met's 2019 ‘Camp’ exhibition. “There was a lot of excitement around this theme,” Valencia noted, hinting at the potential for extravagant outfits inspired by Galliano’s theatrical designs.

However, the decision to revoke the honor points to the enduring impact of Galliano's controversial past. His history, marked by anti-Semitic remarks and other scandals, continues to overshadow his contributions to fashion, leading to a swift reversal by the Met that left many in disbelief.
