Nepal's Catastrophic Floods Claim Over 1,300 Lives Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

The horrifying aftermath of the flash floods in Nepal has resulted in a staggering death toll of 1,355, with rescue operations continuing as nearly 5,000 individuals remain unaccounted for. As of September 7, 2026, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that teams are working tirelessly to locate 4,996 missing persons, including 589 foreign nationals.
Rescue teams have successfully saved 13,396 individuals thus far, but the devastation continues to unfold across several districts. Chitwan has reported the highest number of casualties with 363 bodies recovered, followed by Nawalparasi West (221), Nawalparasi East (222), and Nuwakot (197). Other districts, including Rasuwa, Gorkha, Dhading, and Tanahu, have also reported fatalities.
The calamity, which struck after an ice-rock avalanche on August 26, unleashed torrents that swept through northern and central Nepal, obliterating homes, infrastructure, and hydropower projects. In addition to the toll in Nepal, at least 21 lives were lost on the Chinese side of the border, with more than 500 people still missing in Tibet. Rescue operations are receiving support from teams in India and China, who are working alongside Nepali forces to navigate the difficult conditions.
