Tristan Buckmaster, a professor at NYU, recently accused OpenAI of exerting pressure to prevent him from acknowledging a collaborator from Anthropic who assisted in solving a significant mathematical problem. Buckmaster raised alarms that OpenAI may have utilized their work with Codex to develop its own proof in an expedited manner, casting a shadow over the integrity of the results. The situation escalated further when OpenAI withdrew its sponsorship of a mathematics event at CalTech after facing criticism from university researchers.

In their letter, the mathematicians highlighted the urgency of ensuring that any AI-generated solutions are comprehensible and properly communicated within the mathematical community and beyond.
