Potential Relocation of Paramount Skydance Could Hit Los Angeles Hard

A recent leaked report from the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation has painted a bleak picture for the City of Angels if Paramount Skydance decides to relocate its operations out of California. The findings suggest that such a move could lead to significant job losses and a catastrophic decline in economic output.

Job Losses and Economic Impact

The report, unveiled by Politico, estimates that relocating Paramount's headquarters could result in a staggering loss of between 2,750 and 5,550 job-years across various industries in California. Furthermore, the economic fallout could range from $1.01 billion to $2.03 billion between October 1, 2026, and September 30, 2031. The ramifications would expand dramatically if the move becomes permanent, with projections indicating a loss of approximately 28,990 to 57,980 full-time jobs statewide and an annual economic output decline of $10.6 billion to $21.2 billion.

Deadline Looming for Settlement

This dire situation is rooted in the ongoing legal battle surrounding the $111 billion merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. David Ellison, head of Paramount, has set an ultimatum for California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a coalition of AGs, demanding a settlement by October 1. If negotiations fail, Paramount Skydance is considering relocating to states like Georgia, Texas, or Tennessee. As the deadline approaches, the company is facing a “ticking fee” of $7 million per day to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders until the deal is finalized, which could amount to approximately $1.3 billion if the trial scheduled for March 2 proceeds without resolution.

Contentious Negotiations

The negotiations have been fraught with tension. A prior meeting between Bonta and Ellison, intended to foster progress toward a settlement, was abruptly canceled by Bonta, who accused Paramount of leaking confidential information. Although Paramount has denied these allegations, Bonta insists that he will not resume discussions until they cease what he describes as “lying leaks.”
