Reimagining Beauty: A New Retail Experience in SoHo

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 2 min read

In a bold departure from traditional beauty retail, a new concept in SoHo redefines the shopping experience by intertwining products with community and sensory engagement. Outside In and Nature of Things have launched a unique space at 31 Crosby Street that merges skincare, fragrance, and a café, all designed to foster interaction and exploration.

A Multi-Dimensional Approach

This innovative project, spearheaded by Carisa Janes, the founder of Hourglass Cosmetics, combines flagship stores for both brands alongside a dedicated fragrance gallery and the Outside In Café. Collaborating with Shanghai-based F.O.G. Architecture, Janes aimed to create a space that stimulates all senses. “This was a rare opportunity to design beyond the visual,” says Leilei Wu, Partner in Charge at F.O.G., emphasizing the importance of movement and engagement within the design.

Immersive Design Elements

The Nature of Things flagship epitomizes this immersive approach, featuring organic materials and tactile surfaces like loofah-clad curved walls. A striking stone basin at the entrance invites visitors to interact with products physically. Adjacent to this is the Outside In space, where a coved ceiling and circular oculus create a light-filled environment. Custom vanities enhance the makeup consultation experience, while the fragrance gallery's synchronized lighting adjusts to create an evolving atmosphere.

Beyond Beauty: A Café and Garden Experience

Setting itself apart from conventional beauty retail, the Outside In Café serves an array of coffee, pastries, and specialty drinks in custom ceramics. This café opens up to a hidden garden, providing a serene spot for visitors to relax without the pressure of making a purchase. This shift from a purely transactional space to one that encourages social interaction and community engagement is a hallmark of the new retail vision.

To further enrich the experience, the space will host artist residencies, cultural events, and product launches, proving that beauty retail can be a vibrant hub for creativity and connection.
