Rescue Efforts Intensify for Six Trapped Workers in Nepal's Flood-Damaged Tunnel

In the wake of devastating flash floods that struck Nepal's Rasuwa district, rescue teams are making significant progress in their efforts to reach six workers trapped inside the Chilime Hydropower Station tunnel. As of September 12, 2026, heavy machinery has cleared approximately 70 meters of debris, bringing rescuers closer to the underground powerhouse where the workers are believed to be.

Ambassador Naveen Srivastava of India provided an update on the rescue mission, stating that the operation has accelerated with the introduction of excavators and loaders. The powerhouse is located around 60 meters further down the tunnel, and teams are committed to working through the night to reach it.

In addition to the ongoing efforts at the Chilime site, the Nepal Army has been proactive in constructing over a kilometer of access road from Syafrubesi to facilitate the transport of rescue equipment. Joint operations between Nepali and Indian personnel are taking place inside the tunnel, while more than 100 soldiers have been deployed to assist with rescue operations at the nearby Upper Trishuli-3B hydropower project.
