In a tragic maritime disaster, authorities in the Philippines have confirmed that the death toll from a recent ferry fire has risen to 76, with 13 individuals still missing. As the grim recovery operation continues, officials warn that identifying the victims may take weeks or even months.
Search and Recovery Operations
On September 12, 2026, rescuers retrieved an additional 41 remains from the charred vessel, which had been carrying over 130 passengers when the fire broke out. Forensic specialist Richard Allan Mangalip from the Philippine National Police noted that some remains were found clustered together, while others were scattered. Firefighters had only managed to enter the ferry for the first time after extinguishing the blaze more than a day after it erupted.
Investigation Still Underway
Investigators are working diligently to determine the cause of the fire, which is one of the deadliest maritime incidents in recent Philippine history. Early reports indicated that two explosions were heard shortly before the fire started. However, key areas of the vessel, including the engine room and flooded lower decks, remain inaccessible as authorities continue their search.
The Maritime Industry Authority has stated that the shipowner, Atienza Inter-Island Ferries, is fully cooperating with the investigation and is committed to assisting the families affected by this tragedy.
