Search Underway for Indonesian Passenger Ship with 240 People Aboard

Authorities have launched a search operation for an Indonesian passenger vessel, the Virgo Transport 8, after it lost contact while navigating treacherous weather conditions in the Java Sea. The ship, which was carrying over 240 individuals, went dark around 2 a.m. on Sunday, shortly after it departed from Surabaya, East Java, en route to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.

The Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office reported that they were alerted two hours post communication loss. The last known location of the vessel was determined to be approximately 148 kilometers away from Banjarmasin. Putu Sudayana, the head of the Search and Rescue Office, confirmed that the ship set sail from Surabaya at 10:13 a.m. local time on Saturday.

In response to the situation, a rescue team has been mobilized, and a rescue ship has been dispatched to the estimated position of the Virgo Transport 8. Sudayana emphasized that all available resources are being coordinated with maritime authorities and relevant agencies to ensure the safety of those on board.
