Six South Africans Remain Missing After Catastrophic Nepal Floods

In the wake of severe flash floods that struck near the Nepal-Tibet border, six South African nationals are still unaccounted for, raising concerns among their families and authorities alike.
The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) reported on Thursday, September 10, that there is currently no information regarding the whereabouts of these individuals. The South African government is collaborating with Nepalese officials to ascertain the status of those affected by the disaster, which has left at least 380 people missing.
In response to the crisis, DIRCO has coordinated with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to collect DNA samples from relatives of the missing individuals. This initiative, facilitated through the SAPS Victim Identification Centre, aims to create DNA profiles that can assist in identifying victims amidst the chaos. These profiles have been dispatched to Nepalese police and Interpol in Kathmandu to aid in the identification efforts.
As the situation develops, South African diplomatic missions in New Delhi and Beijing are also in communication with local authorities to expedite the response to this tragic incident. Despite ongoing efforts, DIRCO reiterated that there has been no confirmation about the six South Africans’ status, leaving their families anxiously awaiting news.
