Tensions Rise as Anti-Migrant Demonstrators Clash in Portsmouth

Violence erupted in Portsmouth on Saturday as opposing factions clashed during an anti-migrant protest, leading to multiple arrests and heightened police presence in the city center. The demonstration saw the South Coast Patriots and Stand Up To Racism groups face off amid a crackdown on face coverings, with police implementing strict measures to prevent disorder.

Hampshire Police, responding to the unrest from previous protests, activated a Section 60AA order that empowered officers to require demonstrators to remove masks or any items that obscured their identities. This directive came in the wake of last week's protests, where hundreds of anti-migrant activists, many masked, marched to Eastney Marina after a small boat carrying migrants was intercepted.

As tensions escalated on Saturday, police formed barriers to separate the two groups gathered at Guildhall Square, where heated exchanges and shouts echoed through the area. Officers reported arresting two men and a teenage boy, including a 76-year-old suspect charged with concealing his identity and a 33-year-old accused of obstructing a highway and damaging a police van. A 16-year-old was also taken into custody related to violent incidents from the previous week.

Notably, a social media post encouraged anti-migrant protesters to adopt alternative forms of disguise, such as hats and sunglasses, to circumvent the ban on masks. Meanwhile, the presence of both groups was marked by contrasting messages, with anti-migrant supporters waving Union flags and those from Stand Up To Racism displaying signs advocating for refugee rights. Assistant Chief Constable Paul Bartolomeo stated that while the police would ensure safety and order, they would also support peaceful expressions of dissent.
