Tragic Building Collapse in New Delhi Leaves Six Dead

Rescue operations continue in New Delhi after a five-story building collapsed in the Satya Niketan neighborhood, claiming six lives and injuring several others. The incident occurred on Sunday, igniting a frantic search for those still trapped beneath the rubble.

On Monday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that rescue teams had successfully pulled at least 12 individuals from the debris, with approximately 80% of the wreckage cleared. Only the basement remains to be excavated as emergency services, including police and firefighters, work tirelessly at the scene. Six people are confirmed dead, and six others are receiving medical attention for their injuries.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the building, which had recently reopened to student tenants, was over 55 years old and undergoing renovations. Residents noted that workers were in the basement conducting digging work at the time of the collapse. Preliminary investigations indicate that water accumulation in the basement and ongoing repairs might have contributed to the structure's failure. In response to the tragedy, the Delhi government plans to implement a policy mandating regular structural audits and safety certifications for public buildings, emphasizing the necessity of compliance for continued use.
