Nepal Faces Unprecedented Rescue Challenges Amid Flood Disaster

In the wake of a catastrophic flood disaster, rescue operations in Nepal are grappling with an unprecedented situation, according to Australian expert Arnold Dix. The disaster, triggered by a glacial and mountain collapse on August 26 along the China-Nepal border, has already claimed the lives of at least 1,385 individuals, with over 5,500 still unaccounted for across both nations.
Amidst ongoing search and rescue efforts, Dix, the president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, remarked on social media, "We are facing something I have never faced before." He emphasized the complexity of the situation, highlighting that multiple potential rescues are occurring simultaneously, each fraught with its own dangers and uncertainties.
As the nation observes a day of mourning in accordance with Hindu traditions, rescue teams, including hundreds of foreign experts from countries such as China, India, and South Korea, are working tirelessly. Nepal Army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet confirmed that efforts remain vigorous, stating, "Our focus is on search and rescue at three levels — on ground, by air, and in the tunnels." Recent rescues of three workers, including two Nepalis and a Chinese national, have sparked hope for more survivors.
