Sydney Swans Captain Callum Mills Faces Lengthy Injury Layoff

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 1 min read

In a devastating turn of events for the Sydney Swans, captain Callum Mills has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. This injury, sustained during a crucial match against the Brisbane Lions, will sideline Mills for the remainder of the finals and significant portions of the upcoming season.

Mills suffered the injury early in the first quarter of Saturday’s game, which ended in a commanding 53-point win for the Swans. As he attempted to tackle Brisbane’s Will Ashcroft, his knee buckled, and he was seen on crutches following the match, a stark contrast to the celebratory atmosphere of his teammates.

Swans coach Dean Cox expressed concern immediately after the injury, and the subsequent scans confirmed his fears. Mills is now set to consult with a specialist to plan for surgery. This injury marks another setback for the 29-year-old, who has already faced a challenging season, having missed the 2024 grand final due to a hamstring issue and playing only seven games this year due to previous injuries.
