Typhoon Saudel Devastates Southeast China, Prompting Mass Evacuations

Typhoon Saudel has wreaked havoc across southeast China, leading to significant evacuations and widespread destruction in several provinces. Torrential rains have inundated regions including Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong, prompting authorities to take swift action to protect residents.

In Fujian province, the situation was particularly dire, with the city of Putian experiencing a staggering 416.5mm of rain within just 24 hours. Surrounding areas faced even more severe conditions, recording over 500mm of rainfall. This deluge forced the evacuation of nearly 600,000 individuals from flood-prone zones. Additionally, around 128,000 residents in 53 counties of Jiangxi were affected, leading to emergency evacuations for 9,000 people.

Reports of flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage have become increasingly common as the storm's aftermath unfolds. In Wenzhou, Zhejiang, extreme rainfall resulted in flash floods that trapped over 2,500 teachers and students within a school compound. Furthermore, rescue operations were necessitated in Putian after a river embankment collapsed, leading to the flattening of 100 homes and requiring the rescue of at least 1,260 people. Tragedy struck in Suichuan county, Jiangxi, where a landslip claimed the lives of three individuals, with nine others still unaccounted for.
