UN Endorses Equal Earth Projection to Rectify Map Distortions

The United Nations General Assembly has taken a significant step towards rectifying long-standing distortions in world maps by endorsing the Equal Earth projection. This resolution, passed with overwhelming support at 164 votes in favor and just one against, aims to provide a more accurate representation of countries, particularly in Africa, which has long suffered from misrepresentation on traditional Mercator maps.

A Flawed Legacy of Cartography

For over four centuries, the Mercator projection has been the standard for world maps, a choice that favored European colonial interests during its inception in the 16th century. This projection grossly exaggerates the size of regions far from the equator, making Greenland seem nearly equal in size to Africa, despite Africa being approximately 14 times larger. The distortion impacts perceptions of continents, inflating the size of Europe and North America while compressing Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.

A Call for Change

The resolution, led by Togo on behalf of the African Group, encourages educational institutions and technology companies to adopt the Equal Earth projection. This alternative map preserves the true area of continents, allowing for more honest comparisons while sacrificing some detail in shape. Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey emphasized the importance of maps in shaping education and collective perception, highlighting that the resolution reflects the reality of the African continent. The African Union has already adopted the Equal Earth projection earlier this year, and further discussions are planned to facilitate its implementation.

Interestingly, the United States was the only nation to oppose the resolution, labeling it a “radical ideological project.” Other nations, including Serbia and Ukraine, abstained from voting. US representative Yaryna Ferencevych criticized the focus on mapping issues rather than pressing global problems, but the UN's nonbinding resolution is intended to promote positive change rather than enforce it.
