Bangladesh PM Rahman's India Visit Uncertain Amid Extradition Demands

The recent diplomatic tensions between Bangladesh and India have led to a delay in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's anticipated visit to India. Since taking office in February, Rahman has opted for visits to Malaysia and China, diverging from the customary practice for Bangladeshi leaders to first visit India.

On August 16, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Dhaka announced ongoing discussions with Indian officials regarding this potential visit. MoFA spokesperson A.K.M. Shahidul Karim emphasized that the current atmosphere is strained due to remarks made by deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a press conference in Delhi earlier this month.

Karim stated that a conducive environment is essential for Rahman’s visit, urging India to expedite the extradition of Hasina and the alleged murderers of radical student leader Osman Hadi. Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, after her government was ousted, while Hadi was killed in December 2025, sparking unrest in Bangladesh that affected India's diplomatic missions.

Despite earlier signs of improving relations, including a visit from Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi, the situation has been complicated by Hasina's statements. Karim reiterated that diplomatic channels have been active for weeks but were disrupted by the fallout from Hasina's comments, which criticized Rahman's administration.

India's External Affairs Ministry had previously sent two invitations to Rahman—one for the upcoming BRICS summit and another for a bilateral visit. However, following Hasina's press conference, India distanced itself from her remarks, emphasizing its non-endorsement of criticism directed at Bangladesh’s government.
