California AG Rob Bonta Halts Paramount Merger Talks Amid Bad Faith Allegations

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has abruptly canceled a planned meeting with Paramount executives, citing accusations of bad faith. The meeting, scheduled for Monday, was intended to address the studio's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal valued at $111 billion.

Bonta claimed that Paramount had leaked information about a previous meeting and misrepresented the discussions, stating, "Not only did Paramount leak the alleged substance of settlement discussions, but they misrepresented these discussions, demonstrating a lack of good faith." He expressed willingness to reconvene only when Paramount engages sincerely.

This cancellation follows a coalition of 12 states, led by Bonta, filing an antitrust lawsuit to block the merger, asserting it would harm competition and affect audiences nationwide. A recent report highlighted potential job losses in California, estimating a drop of 4,500 film and TV production positions and a risk of $1.26 billion in wages due to the merger.

While a trial date has been set for March to evaluate the merger's legitimacy, Paramount has garnered support from major theater chains like AMC and Regal, thanks to commitments for theatrical releases. However, Bonta remains unconvinced, emphasizing the need for more substantial assurances from the studio.
