Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has made a notable pivot regarding the contentious merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, now advocating for a swift resolution to the antitrust lawsuit challenging the $111 billion deal. Previously opposed to the merger due to potential job losses, Bass emphasized the urgency for all parties, including Paramount Skydance and California Attorney General Rob Bonta, to negotiate.
During a press conference, Bass highlighted the negative impact of the ongoing uncertainty on workers and productions, stating, “As mayor, I cannot stand by as the job security of thousands of hardworking union members is being put at risk.” She urged for immediate engagement to safeguard the future of the industry in Los Angeles.
Bass' comments come on the heels of a report from the L.A. Department of Economic Opportunity, which warned of significant job losses and estimated economic impacts of $1.26 billion in lost wages and $2.78 billion in lost economic value. This stance drew criticism from the Writers Guild of America West, which accused her of siding with corporate interests over workers' rights.
