Indonesia's 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Leaves Thousands Displaced and in Desperate Need

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara province in Indonesia on August 15, 2026, resulting in significant destruction and prompting the evacuation of approximately 5,000 residents. The earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 51 individuals and left many others injured, with 36 people reported in serious condition.

In the aftermath, the region experienced 341 aftershocks, marking this as one of the deadliest quakes in Indonesia since a catastrophic event in West Java in 2022. The disaster mitigation agency, BNPB, reported that over 1,300 homes were damaged, leaving many residents stranded.

Abdul Mutas, a 63-year-old resident, shared his harrowing experience, saying, "I only brought my body… The tides were rising, so we ran." Many evacuees found shelter in makeshift tents or slept outdoors, fearing the stability of their homes. Deputy regent Simon Subandi noted that most residents opted to sleep outside for safety.

The government has mobilized over 3,500 military and police personnel to aid in rescue operations, which are ongoing as crews navigate blocked roads caused by landslides. While some areas remain difficult to access, rescuers have reached parts of the affected town of Maumere.

Residents are facing dire conditions, with reports of power outages affecting petrol stations, and many lacking essential supplies. Umri, a villager from Nangahale, expressed urgent needs for food, water, and medical supplies, highlighting the desperation of those affected. As the death toll continues to rise, officials are considering declaring a state of emergency to facilitate resource allocation.
