Indonesia Faces Tragedy as 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Eastern Region

A catastrophic earthquake measuring 7.7 struck eastern Indonesia early Saturday, resulting in at least 53 fatalities and displacing approximately 5,000 residents. The tremor, which occurred at 5:58 AM local time, had its epicenter roughly 68 kilometers from Ende, Flores Island, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

In the wake of the quake, over 341 aftershocks have rattled the region, marking this as one of the country’s deadliest seismic events in recent years. Deputy Health Minister Benjamin Paulus Octavianus reported that 36 individuals sustained serious injuries, with an additional 77 suffering minor wounds.

Sikka regency was among the hardest hit, with many residents seeking refuge in a sports arena. Local witness Nona recounted the terrifying experience, stating, “There were 13 of us inside the house, and we all ran to save ourselves.” Meanwhile, in Maumere, residents have resorted to sleeping outdoors under tarpaulins, as they fear returning to their damaged homes.

Rescue efforts are hampered by landslides blocking access routes, particularly in Nagekeo regency, where more than 2,000 villagers have been forced into temporary shelters. Lieutenant General Suharyanto reported significant structural damage, with over 157 houses destroyed and nearly 200 affected.

As the situation unfolds, authorities are contemplating a state of emergency declaration to facilitate further aid and support.
