Devastating 7.7 Magnitude Quake Strikes Indonesia, Leaving a Trail of Destruction

By Editor • August 16, 2026 • 1 min read

A catastrophic earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale rocked eastern Indonesia early Saturday morning, resulting in at least 51 fatalities and displacing around 5,000 residents. The tremor, which hit at 5:58 AM local time, was centered approximately 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende on Flores Island, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake triggered a staggering 341 aftershocks, marking it as one of the deadliest seismic events in recent Indonesian history. Deputy Health Minister Benjamin Paulus Octavianus reported that 36 individuals sustained serious injuries, while 77 others suffered minor wounds.

In the Sikka regency, one of the most severely affected areas, displaced individuals took refuge in sports arenas, as reported by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). Local resident Nona recounted the harrowing experience of the quake, emphasizing the panic that ensued as she and her family rushed to escape their collapsing home.

Rescue operations have faced significant challenges, as landslides have obstructed access to Nagekeo, the closest region to the epicenter. Lieutenant General Suharyanto of BNPB noted that around 157 homes were destroyed, with nearly 200 more damaged. In total, over 3,500 military and police personnel have been deployed to assist in the emergency response.

Authorities are contemplating declaring a state of emergency to facilitate additional resources for recovery efforts, as many areas remain inaccessible and the full extent of the disaster continues to unfold.
