Major Earthquake Strikes Flores Island, Indonesia, Causing Widespread Devastation

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Flores Island in eastern Indonesia early Saturday, claiming 48 lives and injuring many more. The quake prompted approximately 5,000 residents to evacuate as hundreds of structures were damaged.
Following the initial tremor, the area experienced over 341 aftershocks. Many residents remain without electricity or phone service, and access to some emergency roads is still blocked, complicating relief efforts.
