England's Tongue Affirms Root's Message on Off-Field Conduct Is Clear

Fast bowler Josh Tongue has expressed confidence that captain Joe Root's recent address regarding player behavior has made a significant impact on the England squad. Following the late-night incident involving Brydon Carse, Root's message was delivered with clarity, according to Tongue.

"It was a chat that was needed, a very good chat from Rooty," Tongue stated in an interview with BBC Sport. He emphasized the importance of representing England with pride and being role models for young aspiring cricketers.

Carse was removed from the squad for the upcoming second Test against Pakistan after being arrested during a night out in Derby. Although he was later de-arrested, the incident has drawn scrutiny from the England and Wales Cricket Board, which referred the case to the Cricket Regulator.

Reflecting on Root's comments, Tongue noted, "He was honest with us all in the changing room. He said it straight. As soon as that chat was finished, our focus was fully on these next five days." When asked if Root's message had resonated, Tongue replied emphatically, "Yeah, 100%. What has happened in the past is the past and we need to try to move on from that."

Tongue himself has faced scrutiny after being involved in a separate late-night incident last year, but he remains focused on his cricketing career. With the first Test victory over Pakistan under their belt, England is looking to maintain momentum at Lord's, aiming for their first multi-match series win since 2024.
