Iceland Decides Against Renewing EU Membership Discussions

Iceland has made a decisive choice regarding its future relationship with the European Union, rejecting the prospect of resuming membership talks. In a recent referendum, nearly 53% of voters opposed the discussions, while just over 47% supported them, indicating a very close contest with only 9,500 votes separating the two sides.
Despite this setback in pursuing full EU membership, Iceland remains engaged with the EU through its participation in the single market and the Schengen area. However, joining the EU would mean entering the customs union and moving towards adopting the euro as its currency.
