A brutal gang assault in Kenscoff, a community overlooking Port-au-Prince, has left 47 dead and 22 injured. This incident, which occurred late Monday night, has intensified calls for the local police chief to resign amid growing frustration over inadequate protection from the authorities.
The gang violence in Kenscoff is not new; residents have faced multiple attacks since last year, resulting in significant loss of life and forcing thousands to flee their homes. The recent raid has sparked outrage as victims were killed just minutes from a police station. Local rights group RNDDH reported varying death tolls, estimating between 30 to 40 fatalities.
In response, the Haitian government condemned the “heinous attack” and promised a reinforcement of security measures. Prime Minister's office assured that “Kenscoff will not be abandoned,” emphasizing the restoration of government authority. However, residents remain skeptical, with many blaming the government for their plight. “People in Kenscoff are suffering, and the government is to blame,” lamented local resident Coriolan Kendy.
The UN-backed Gang Suppression Force is working to increase its troop presence to combat gang activity effectively, though immediate actions in response to this latest violence are yet to be confirmed.
