In a firm statement, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, refuted claims of dialogue between her brother and US President Donald Trump, asserting that the US maintains a "hostile" stance toward North Korea. Her comments, released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, reflect skepticism about US intentions.
Kim Yo Jong remarked, "I am completely unaware" of any discussions, suggesting that this is one area of foreign policy that remains opaque even to her. Meanwhile, Trump has expressed a different narrative, claiming a positive rapport with Kim and hinting at future meetings.
Trump recently stated that he has been in communication with Kim, describing their exchanges as favorable. He emphasized the respect he believes Kim has for him, contrasting this with frustrations over South Korea's lack of support for US military operations in Iran. In a move to recalibrate US military engagements, Trump ordered a reduction in joint exercises with South Korea, highlighting a shift in focus amid ongoing tensions.
Despite the personal diplomacy, analysts caution that Trump's approach has not led to significant progress. North Korea's missile and nuclear advancements continue, alongside its deepening ties with Russia, including military cooperation in Ukraine.
