In Belgrade, Serbia, thousands gathered to pay their respects at the funeral of Ratko Mladić, the notorious Bosnian Serb military leader known as the 'Butcher of Bosnia.' His death at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence for genocide has reignited deep-seated sentiments regarding his legacy.

Despite being a convicted war criminal responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where nearly 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were killed, many in Serbia view Mladić as a national hero. While his supporters view him as a defender of the Serbian nation, others criticize the media and educational narratives that depict him merely as a dutiful soldier.
