Falklands Commemorate Merchant Seafarers in London Ceremony

In a poignant ceremony held on Sunday, the Falkland Islands Government Representative to the UK and Europe, Richard Hyslop, honored the brave merchant seafarers who served during the 1982 Falklands War. The wreath-laying took place at Trinity Square Gardens, specifically at the Falkland Islands Memorial, as part of the annual Merchant Navy Day observance.

Hyslop was accompanied by veterans from the South Atlantic Medal Association, a group dedicated to those who participated in the conflict, and Lord West of Spithead, a distinguished patron of the Merchant Navy Association and a veteran himself. Also present was Chris Locke, a former Royal Fleet Auxiliary chief officer, who played a crucial role as the Falkland Islands Marine Officer and Harbour Master.

“Each year, we pause to remember the service and sacrifice of merchant seafarers who served during the Falklands War to defend the freedom and right to self-determination of Islanders,” Hyslop remarked during the ceremony. This annual commemoration falls on September 3, a date of historical significance as it marks the sinking of the SS Athenia in 1939, the first British merchant vessel lost in World War II.

The event also emphasized the ongoing importance of maritime transport for the Falkland Islands, which relies heavily on shipping for both imports and exports, particularly in its fisheries sector. Hyslop expressed profound gratitude to the Merchant Navy, stating, “We remain hugely grateful to the Merchant Navy, both past and present, for their invaluable role in supporting the Falklands and allowing our modern Islands to prosper.”
