JioHotstar Makes Global Debut, Leaving Sports Behind

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 2 min read

In a bold move to expand its reach, JioHotstar, the streaming service from Reliance Industries, is set to launch internationally, replacing Hotstar in the UK, Canada, and Singapore. This strategic shift marks JioHotstar's first foray outside India, where it boasts over 500 million active users, primarily driven by its sports offerings.

Starting September 2, users in the three target markets will lose access to the Hotstar app, with their credentials transferring seamlessly to the new JioHotstar platform. Despite the absence of live sports, a key element of its Indian operations, the platform will debut with a wealth of over 160,000 hours of entertainment content, including popular Indian films, TV originals, and reality shows like Bigg Boss.

JioHotstar's decision to exclude sports from its international launch is attributed to existing licensing agreements. However, the company has not dismissed the possibility of incorporating sports in the future. In India, the platform streams major cricket tournaments, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international events, which significantly contribute to its user engagement.

Under its new branding, JioHotstar will offer content in 12 languages, including English and various Indian dialects, catering to a diverse audience. The service is expected to target over 4 million potential viewers across the three countries, tapping into the strong connection that South Asian communities have with Indian entertainment.

Pricing for JioHotstar has been set competitively, with subscription rates in the UK at £19.99 quarterly or £69.99 annually, and in Canada at CA$19.99 quarterly or CA$49.99 annually. In Singapore, users will pay SG$29.98 quarterly or SG$69.98 annually. Notably, these prices are comparable to the previous Hotstar offerings, but without the sports component at launch.

As JioHotstar prepares to roll out its services, the company aims to not merely export its Indian streaming model but to create a platform that resonates with a broader global audience’s tastes and preferences. This ambitious expansion is poised to reshape the streaming landscape for South Asian entertainment abroad.
