Kirk Cousins Named Raiders' Starting Quarterback for Season Opener

The Las Vegas Raiders have officially announced Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season opener against the Miami Dolphins on September 13. This decision follows a competitive battle among Cousins, rookie Fernando Mendoza, and Aidan O’Connell.

Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak praised Cousins for his strong performance, stating, "(Cousins has) played really good football. I’m really happy with all three of our quarterbacks." Cousins showcased his skills during the preseason, completing 13 of 17 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Cousins, who signed with the Raiders in April after being released by the Atlanta Falcons, struggled during his first season with the Falcons, throwing 18 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. However, he rebounded impressively last November, throwing for 1,721 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight starts.

Meanwhile, Mendoza, the 22-year-old reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is being groomed for the future. General Manager John Spytek highlighted Mendoza's strong work ethic and commitment to improvement, noting, "His time is coming, but he’s got to earn it every day." O’Connell has also contributed with 17 career starts under his belt, as the Raiders prepare for the season ahead.
