Protests Erupt in Portsmouth Following Arrival of Small Boat Migrants

Portsmouth witnessed a surge of demonstrators on Sunday evening as news broke of around 140 migrants being intercepted after arriving on the Hampshire coast via a small boat. The situation escalated as protesters confronted police, chanting "stop the boats" while far-right activist Daniel Thomas encouraged supporters to join him at the scene.

Emergency services sprang into action, deploying two RNLI lifeboats along with an HM Coastguard helicopter and an aircraft to assist in the operation. The migrants, who had reportedly launched from Baie de Seine, France, were taken to the Eastney area and will be processed at the Manston immigration center in Kent.

Christine Martin, a local resident who found herself unable to leave her boat due to the incident, expressed her concerns over the large emergency presence, noting that numerous police and ambulance vehicles were on-site.

Local politicians voiced their apprehensions regarding the incident. Joe Robertson, the Conservative MP for Isle of Wight East, expressed alarm at the migrant crossing occurring this far west and vowed to seek clarity from the Home Office about potential new routes used by people smugglers.
