Saudi Airstrike Allegedly Kills Seven in Yemeni Prison, Houthi Rebels Claim

In a distressing turn of events, Yemen's Houthi rebels have accused Saudi Arabia of conducting an airstrike on a prison facility in the northern city of al-Hazm, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including a child. The attack targeted the Central Corrective Facility in al-Jawf province, which lies close to the Saudi border.
Anees al-Asbahi, spokesperson for the Houthi-run Health Ministry, reported that at least seven more people were injured in the strike, which occurred on Monday. Al Masirah TV, a media outlet associated with the Houthis, broadcast footage purportedly showing the destruction wrought by the airstrike, depicting a collapsed building and frantic rescue efforts amid the debris.
Accusations of Aggression and Retaliation
Yahya Saree, a Houthi spokesperson, condemned the airstrike as a “massacre” and accused Saudi Arabia of escalating its military aggression against Yemen by employing reconnaissance drones and supplying mercenaries with weaponry. He warned that the consequences of such actions would not be overlooked and insisted that the Yemeni people would not forget the attacks.
Escalation of Conflict and International Concerns
The allegations come amid intensified clashes between the Houthis and Yemen's internationally recognized government, which recently claimed significant territorial victories in regions including al-Jawf and Marib. As the conflict escalates, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, urged both sides to cease hostilities, cautioning that the current surge in violence could lead to a full-scale war.
This incident is not unprecedented; airstrikes on detention facilities have been reported multiple times throughout Yemen's protracted conflict. Notably, a 2022 strike by the Saudi-led coalition on a prison in Saada province resulted in numerous casualties.
