Sofía Beas Transforms Brooklyn Loft into a Dream Design Studio

In the vibrant neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, interior designer Sofía Beas has turned her loft into a captivating blend of home and creative workspace. The Mexican designer, who has been a part of the community since the days when HBO's 'Girls' spotlighted the area, discovered this sun-soaked apartment just before the pandemic lockdown in 2020. Beas recalls the moment she stepped inside, saying, "It felt so out of our league." Little did she know, this would be the beginning of a remarkable transformation.

From Grit to Glamour

Beas, a Guadalajara native, credits her upbringing in a home designed by renowned architect Andrés Casillas de Alba as a significant influence on her design philosophy. Although she initially pursued graphic design, her passion for spatial aesthetics led her to set and production design, ultimately guiding her to earn a master’s degree in interior design from Pratt Institute in 2014. After honing her skills at prestigious firms like AvroKO and working with designer Giancarlo Valle, she launched her own practice in 2024.

A Thoughtful Renovation

During the early pandemic months, Beas seized the opportunity to renovate her loft. With the help of a contractor who allowed her to source all materials, she was able to keep expenses manageable while overseeing every detail. The couple initially faced challenges with the space, which featured only a kitchenette and a cramped bathroom. The renovation prioritized creating a blend of welcoming living spaces and functional work areas, incorporating two bedrooms and a second bathroom along a newly designed entrance hallway.

Among the standout features of the loft is the primary bedroom, adorned with a custom Minjae Kim headboard that integrates lighting from Umberto Bellardi Ricci. Inspired by the kitchen at Barragán's Casa Pedregal, the secondary bathroom showcases pink tiles, highlighting Beas's unique design sensibilities. Her commitment to custom furniture design shines through, with pieces crafted by local artisans, including a striking dining table made from silvered bronze.

Now working from her loft, Beas often utilizes virtual reality to visualize her projects, emphasizing her holistic approach to design that intertwines her clients' stories with her own creative narrative. What began as a lucky find has evolved into a personal oasis that embodies her aspirations and design philosophy.
