Successful Rescue of Two Hydropower Workers from Mud-Caked Tunnel in Nepal

In a remarkable turn of events, rescue teams in Nepal successfully extricated two hydropower workers from a tunnel overwhelmed by mud and debris, a week after devastating floods hit the region. The workers, identified as Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan, were trapped in the aftermath of a catastrophic flood that surged through the Himalayan area on August 26.
As rescuers celebrated, Shah, a 30-year-old mechanical foreman, was pulled from the muddy confines of the tunnel first, followed shortly by Maharjan, 45, a mechanical supervisor. Video footage released by the energy ministry captured the moment, showing Shah being helped to his feet, while Maharjan, whose body was coated in mud, was carried away on a stretcher with his hands pressed together in a gesture of prayer.
Home Minister Sudan Gurung shared the uplifting news of their rescue, expressing hope as searches continue for hundreds of other workers still believed to be trapped in various tunnels linked to hydropower projects across the region. Efforts led by teams at the Trishuli 3A hydropower site have been ongoing amidst challenging conditions, with over 1,250 bodies recovered and more than 5,000 individuals reported missing since the disaster.
