Transforming a Historic Gold Coast Penthouse: A Blend of Modern Comfort and Classic Charm

By Editor • September 14, 2026 • 1 min read

In a remarkable transformation, a stunning 1920s penthouse duplex located in Chicago's Gold Coast Historic District has undergone a comprehensive 22-month renovation, harmonizing modern amenities with the home’s rich historical character. The 8,000-square-foot residence, admired for its soaring ceilings and Art Deco details, faced challenges in functionality for its new family owners, prompting a complete redesign.

A Space for Family Gatherings

Architect Joan Craig and her team at Craig & Company took on the ambitious project to create a more intuitive living space that accommodates family life. The previous layout lacked essential features like an eat-in kitchen, outdoor areas, and a mudroom, which were critical for the family, especially with four children. By removing several walls, they successfully opened up the home, facilitating a seamless flow between the kitchen, dining, and family rooms.

Preserving Historical Elements

Maintaining the spirit of the original structure while incorporating modern conveniences was a key focus. The renovation preserved significant architectural details such as the grand crown moldings and paneling in the living room, while new technologies were discreetly integrated into the design. The home now boasts a sophisticated Crestron system for controlling lighting, HVAC, and security, alongside meticulously restored features like a brass-and-glass laylight and leaded-glass windows enhanced with storm protection.

Design Inspired by Nature

Interior design choices were influenced by the stunning views of Lake Michigan, with a color palette of gold, neutrals, and blues that evoke warmth amidst Chicago's long winters. The dining room stands out with a bold peacock blue high-gloss lacquer, reflecting the client's request for a vibrant touch. This thoughtful blend of old and new not only honors the apartment’s history but also meets the modern demands of family living, showcasing how a historic home can evolve while retaining its unique charm.
