In a remarkable transformation, a stunning 1920s penthouse duplex located in Chicago's Gold Coast Historic District has undergone a comprehensive 22-month renovation, harmonizing modern amenities with the home’s rich historical character. The 8,000-square-foot residence, admired for its soaring ceilings and Art Deco details, faced challenges in functionality for its new family owners, prompting a complete redesign.

Architect Joan Craig and her team at Craig & Company took on the ambitious project to create a more intuitive living space that accommodates family life. The previous layout lacked essential features like an eat-in kitchen, outdoor areas, and a mudroom, which were critical for the family, especially with four children. The home now boasts a sophisticated Crestron system for controlling lighting, HVAC, and security, alongside meticulously restored features like a brass-and-glass laylight and leaded-glass windows enhanced with storm protection.
