Walmart Joins Recall of Frozen Berries Over E. Coli Concerns

Walmart has expanded a recall of frozen berries following a potential E. coli outbreak, initially linked to products sold at Publix, prompting action across multiple states.
On September 2, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. announced that one lot of Great Value frozen berries would be pulled from Walmart shelves in 16 states, including Florida, Texas, and Illinois. While no illnesses have been directly connected to this specific batch, the broader outbreak has already affected 12 individuals in Florida and Georgia, with four requiring hospitalization.
The FDA previously categorized the earlier recall involving Publix's GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries as Class I, indicating a serious health risk. Although the newly recalled Great Value products have not yet received this classification, consumers are urged to take precautions.
Individuals with the affected berries in their freezers are advised not to consume them. The FDA recommends disposing of the products or returning them to Walmart for a complete refund. E. coli O145 is a particularly dangerous strain that can lead to severe health issues, especially in vulnerable populations.
