Colombia Reels from Devastating Earthquake: Casualties Climb

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western and central Colombia on August 10 has resulted in a staggering 329 fatalities and left over 4,600 injured. The National Disaster Risk Management Unit reported that 247 individuals remain unaccounted for.
As the situation continues to unfold, the number of people impacted has surged to 314,751 across 481 municipalities in 16 departments. Extensive damage has been recorded, with 171,273 homes affected, 31,183 completely destroyed, and 553 buildings collapsed, notably in the cities of Cali and Pereira.
Rescue efforts have transitioned to recovery operations, as the focus shifts to clearing debris and identifying victims. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared an economic emergency, allowing for swift legislative action to aid in recovery efforts.
