Escalating Drone Warfare: Ukraine Targets Russian Oil and Infrastructure

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 1 min read

In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has unleashed a series of drone strikes on Russian economic targets, including an oil refinery and a logistics center for the online retailer Ozon. This offensive comes in the wake of a devastating 'double-tap' attack by Russia on a Ukrainian shopping center that resulted in 16 deaths and left nine missing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed casualties from recent missile strikes on Kyiv, where one individual was killed and another injured as Russian forces intensified their attacks on the capital. Meanwhile, Russian officials reported that their defenses had intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones, specifically noting the downing of 457 drones overnight.

The conflict continues to take a toll on civilians, with at least two fatalities reported in the Kyiv region and additional casualties in Zaporizhzhia due to Russian strikes. The United Nations highlighted Kyiv as one of the most heavily affected cities in July, documenting 54 civilian deaths and more than 200 injuries.

In retaliation for the ongoing assaults, Ukrainian forces targeted the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in Samara, approximately 1,000 kilometers from the front lines. This strategic attack underscores Ukraine's shift towards disrupting Russia's economic infrastructure amidst the ongoing war. Ozon, impacted by the latest strike, stated that operations at its logistics center in Chapayevsk have been temporarily halted due to the attack.
