ICC President Calls on Japan to Support Tribunal Amid U.S. Sanctions

By Editor • August 26, 2026 • 1 min read

In a remote news conference from The Hague, ICC President Tomoko Akane urged Japan to leverage its diplomatic power against U.S. sanctions targeting tribunal officials. She emphasized the need for Japan to help prevent member states in the region from withdrawing from the International Criminal Court.

Akane firmly denied U.S. claims that the court undermines the sovereignty of non-member countries, asserting, "There is absolutely no reason for me to be sanctioned." She rejected the notion that the ICC misuses international law to infringe upon state sovereignty.
