Iran Urges U.S. to Take Initiative for De-escalation Amid Regional Tensions

In a bid to ease rising tensions, Iranian leaders have called on the United States to fulfill its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This message emerged during a significant meeting in Tehran between Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir and top Iranian officials, including President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf.

During these discussions, Ghalibaf emphasized the importance of U.S. compliance with the MoU, asserting, "It is the United States that must adhere to its commitments based on the agreement." General Mohsen Rezaei also voiced skepticism towards American intentions, stating, "We distrust America and it must change its behaviour." Meanwhile, Field Marshal Munir reaffirmed Pakistan's dedication to fostering stability in the region.

The meetings came at a critical juncture as hostilities have resumed following the expiration of a 60-day ceasefire under the MoU. While Pakistan views the agreement as a pathway back to dialogue, Iran insists Washington must first address its perceived violations of the terms.

Accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Munir's one-day visit included talks with Iranian officials about measures to prevent further escalation and expedite the resolution of ongoing conflicts. The Iranian leadership praised Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue aimed at de-escalation.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Field Marshal Munir had recently spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump, which may have provided Pakistan with insights into the U.S. stance. This visit coincided with the announcement of a new U.S. economic pressure campaign against Iran, raising concerns that further sanctions could exacerbate the conflict rather than promote negotiations.

As diplomatic dialogues continue, the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point. Iran insists that U.S. commitments regarding this crucial waterway must be addressed before any discussions on reopening it can take place. The Omani Foreign Minister is set to arrive in Tehran soon, indicating heightened diplomatic engagement in the region.
