Pakistan Protests US Ambassador's Comments on Kashmir

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant diplomatic response, Pakistan’s Foreign Office summoned the US charge d’affaires in Islamabad on Wednesday to express strong disapproval of recent comments made by the US ambassador to India regarding Jammu and Kashmir.

The Foreign Office emphasized that Pakistan categorically rejects the assertion that Jammu and Kashmir is a ‘part of India,’ asserting it as an internationally recognized disputed territory. The statement highlighted that the region’s status should be determined in line with United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan criticized the US ambassador's remarks as “irresponsible,” claiming they contradicted the long-standing US position on the Kashmir issue and undermined international law. While Pakistan acknowledged a previous offer by former US President Donald Trump to mediate the dispute, it urged the US to maintain consistency in its public statements regarding the region's disputed status.

The contentious history of Kashmir dates back to 1948, following a war between India and Pakistan. A UN resolution from 1949 has yet to result in a plebiscite that would determine the future of the territory. The situation intensified in August 2019 when India revoked the special status of occupied Kashmir, a move upheld by its Supreme Court in December 2023.
